"I was approached by the manager of The Sugarboat Reivers, early in December 2009 about producing an album with the band. I went and saw them play a gig in Glasgow just before Christmas and despite the fact that they had only been together for a few weeks was immediately struck by their musicality and sound. I particularly liked the way they mixed Scottish traditional music, classical music and contemporary feelings together. We have subsequently routined together and the blend of influences has now become a recognisable signature sound. We're hoping to record an album later this year."
Jerry Boys, multiple Grammy winner and producer/mixer for (amongst many others) Buena Vista Social Club, Bassekou Kouyate, Ibrahim Ferrer, Shakira, Ali Farke Touré, Omara Portuondo, Ry Cooder, Everything But The Girl, Steeleye Span
Note - the jukebox tracks were recorded live with Jerry Boys producing rough demos, but were not mixed or edited by him.
The Sugarboat Reivers are:
Seylan Baxter vocals, cello, 5-string electric cello
Ruaridh Pringle vocals, guitar, octave mandolin
Cheyenne Brown Scottish harp, electro harp
Jon Bews 5-string fiddle, backing vocals
The band is firmly rooted in the Scots Language and traditions. A contemporary folk band, its bias is towards song and vocal harmonies. Playing both traditional and new material, their sound encompasses elements of an ‘enhanced’ string quartet, with harp, cello, octave mandolin/guitar, fiddle & percussion, and male and female vocals). Arrangements are innovative but firmly rooted in the tradition.
